The Local Party Symposium

The Local Party is hosting a one day symposium to discuss the need for greater community participation in how we govern ourselves, and the role Citizen Juries can play in this.

We will address two complex issues facing Tasmania to explore how we work together in practice to deliver better solutions.

Justice Reform

Our jails have been condemned for breaching basic human rights. At a time where some countries are reducing crime rates, Tasmania is arguing over where to locate its next maximum security facility. Join a panel of experts as we devise new ways of making our communities safer.

Marine Planning

The release of Richard Flannagan’s book, Toxic,  and the Tasmanian government's stated support for the doubling of the Salmon industry has caused significant community concern. The challenges facing our coastline and the communities who live and rely on it are, however, broader than just salmon farm expansion. Join a panel of scientists and planning experts as we construct a plan to balance the needs of industry, the environment and the community.
