Does Tasmania Need a New Prison?

TO: The Hon Premier Peter Gutwein; Hon Elise Archer MP - Attorney-General, Minister for Justice, Minister for Corrections; Ella Haddad - ALP Shadow Attorney-General, Shadow Minister for Justice and Shadow Minister for Corrections; Dr Rosalie Woodruff - Greens Shadow Attorney-General

Dear Political Leaders of lutruwita/Tasmania,

The Westbury community has been vocal in it’s opposition to the new prison planned for the outskirts of their town. However, the issue of where to put a new prison has prompted many to ask if we need a new prison at all? Instead, people are asking, “what could we do to reduce crime?

We the undersigned request a Citizens Jury be held to better understand how we can reduce crime and make our Island an even safer place to live.

We request that current plans for a prison in the north of the State be placed on hold, to give the people of Tasmania an opportunity to reassess our current criminal justice system.

We further request that at a minimum, the results of the Jury's deliberations are tabled in Parliament, are presented to a justice sub-committee of Cabinet, and that Jurors have an opportunity to present finding to a cross party delegation
