What is a Talking Circle?
A ‘Talking Circle’ is a small group of people getting together to discuss the things important to them, and what they want from their state and federal representatives. They are based on the 'Kitchen Table Conversations' model that has had success with 'voices for' groups and others around the nation. The Local Network began having these conversations before the 2022 Federal Election but we are now rolling out as many as possible over the next 12 months.
How does it work?
A Talking Circle is facilitated by the Local Network and attended by a group of citizens, who may or may not know each other beforehand. We are also training people to host a gathering of their close friends, the format is the same. Everyone attending is asked a series of 8 identical questions, plus the opportunity for whatever you want to raise.
All of these answers are collated and at the end of the 12 month period, everyone who took part in a Talking Circle will receive a report on the findings.
Why do it?
After multiple conversations have occurred and the report is delivered back to participants, we then look for the type of person who can represent the wishes and concerns of the community. This is the most effective and democratic way, to identify and help elect community members as our independent members of state and federal parliament.
How can I get involved?
Talking Circles are occurring on a rolling basis.
The next one available for participation is listed below.
